What a difference a week can make. One moment your setting sail from Miami to Grand Turk, the next you find yourself in the midst of the wintery Michigan cold. Such is the life of a rockstar.. or rockstars... more specifically that of rock veterans Alter Bridge. On the heels of their first ever Shiprocked event, the guys in Alter Bridge went from boat to bus and wasted no time getting their 2017 North American Tour underway.

The hard rock faithful filled the Royal Oak Music Theater early and were treated to sounds of Weapons Anew and Nonpoint. First up was Weapons of Anew and the crowd seemed warmly receptive to their set. Weapons of Anew have a single out definitely worth checking out called, "Killshot" (via OK!Good Records) but after seeing/hearing their set, we at Full Metal Rock are looking forward to seeing/hearing more from these guys.

Nonpoint brought their A-game to the Royal Oak Music Theater and took things up a notch with their aggressively energetic set. Vocalist Elias Soriano has a commanding stage presence as he and fellow guitar bandmates, BC Kochmit and Rasheed Thomas, exchanged thrashing and flailing of their dreads. The non-traditional setup of drummer Robb Rivera's kit, (turned so he is profile to the crowd), really brings Robb into the mix more not only to engage with bassist Adam Woloszyn and his other bandmates, but also gives fans a different perspective than what they may be used to. Defintely a band you need to see live- checkout Nonpoint's latest, "The Poison Red", available now.

The time had come for the headliner and you could feel the excitement building as the intro music played over the loud speakers and Alter Bridge prepared to take the stage. The crowd erupted in loud cheers and their fists in the air as Myles Kennedy, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Scott Phillips took their positions and took off with a new track, "Writing On the Wall". This tour, of course, is in support of their 5th studio release, 'The Last Hero' and on this particular night, brings the guys back near guitarist Mark Tremonti's hometown of Detroit, MI. This is a well known fact amongst the AB community and likely aspiring rock guitarists already, but I find it important to mention here because it's these shows (Detroit, Chicago & Orlando areas in particular) that I feel tend to have more of a buzz or energy about them. And this night was no exception.

From the moment they stepped onto the stage the crowds hung onto every last note with sheer excitement. Fans in return were treated to a rythmic 'ebb and flow', if you will, of classic AB favorites like "Come To Life", "Rise Today", "Metalingus", "Isolation" and the epic "Blackbird". Mark Tremonti showed off his lead vocal abilities for "Waters Rising" and they performed newer tracks including: "My Champion", "Crows On A Wire" and "Show Me A Leader". Giving just about everybody a little somethin to go home smiling about, including the die-hards on the rail.

Having followed Alter Bridge since their inception in 2004, I can honestly say they've never sounded better. True, the stage production is slightly bigger now with more lighting effects and new backdrop, but that just brings the visuals up to the same level the audible has been for years. AB are at the top of their game yet they still remain some of the most grounded and humble guys you could ever meet. And we hope there's plenty more years of writing and performing left in their tank.

See if Alter Bridge will be performing near your hometown in the dates listed below. If not, then I see a much needed road trip in your future. ;)
