Tremonti Cauterize Album Review
By ~Maggie Wright @FullMetalRock
Cauterize, the second album by Tremonti, is quite possibly one of the most anticipated metal albums for 2015. Initially described as the “side project” of guitarist Mark Tremonti (Creed, Alter Bridge), Tremonti has shown there are no limits to what they can do.
This, indeed, is no sideline; this is the music of a band ready to headline arenas. This is as big an album as any of the band members have released, with any band. The partnership with Eric “ERock” Friedman, Garrett Whitlock (both former Submersed members), and Wolfgang Van Halen, has enabled them to extricate the best out of each other; a mind blowing amount of talent and skill. (Tanner Keegan is stepping in as bassist temporarily on the Cauterize 2015 Tour).
Compared to the debut album, “All I Was”, this new volume of work is BBFH. Bigger, Badder, Faster, Harder. Speed metal meets melodic rock, with a whole lot of thrash thrown in for good measure, with seamless cohesion. There is no easing us in gently here! “Radical Change” comes in hard and fast from the start, slowing only to provide us with one of those guitar solos we crave.
Tremonti is kind enough to allow brief, occasional moments to catch a breath, before unleashing “Flying Monkeys”; slightly slower in tempo but heavier and more emphatic, as if to say, “We’ve got your attention and now we intend to keep it!” At the Listening Party this past January in Orlando, Mark explained how the song got its name. At the time Mark was creating the riff, a guitar tech commented that it sounded like something from the Wizard of Oz, when the Wicked Witch of the West sent out her flying monkeys. Mark filed the riff in his computer under that name, and the name stuck.
To the technically minded, Mark is a master guitar player and the contrast between his structured approach and ERock’s looser playing style compliment each other brilliantly. The occasional use of dissonance and distortion keeps you wondering what is coming next. Cauterize has layer upon layer of complicated rhythms, intricate percussion, and killer riffs. For those not trained musically, it’s face-melting rock, plain and simple.
Now seemingly more comfortable in his role as front man, Mark’s vocals are stronger than ever, and are deserving of our attention; particularly strong in both power and range in “Sympathy” and “Providence”. The addition of Wolfgang enables Tremonti to not only have an incredibly skilled bassist, but also to have some tight three part harmonies, something you wouldn’t expect from speed or thrash metal, which adds yet more depth to the skill of this quartet.
If you are the “I need to be eased in gently” type, you would do well to listen to the tracks in reverse order. That way you can still experience Garrett hitting shit hard, but will have the time to get used to the idea of having your face melted. “Providence” shows us the style people have come to expect from Mark, we are now hearing his words with his voice, and it is epic. “Sympathy”, an anthem of a song, can easily be envisaged sung in sold out stadiums and in front of mass crowds in arenas.
Whichever way you decide to listen, this is an album that you will have on repeat for years to come. From the pre-production writing process, to the studio producing skills of Michael “Elvis” Baskette (Alter Bridge, Slash), Tremonti have got this right, start to finish, inside out, back to front. This is the type of album that makes you say, “I can’t wait to hear this live!”
