Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center has seen its share or great shows over the years and tonight was no exception. Tonight the stage was shared by three legendary rock and roll acts in Cheap Trick, John Jett and the Blackhearts and Heart. All of these bands have had historic and ground breaking careers that have led them all to Cleveland, OH and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Cheap Trick began the night and wowed the crowd from the beginning with the antics of guitarist Rick Nielsen along with the vocals of singer Robin Zander and basslines by Tom Petersson. These 3 original members have been joined by Daxx Nielson, the son of Rick Nielsen, who has known his band mates all his life. Daxx joined the band in 2010 after the departure of original drummer Bun E. Carlos and has been behind the drum kit ever since. The band played newer songs and old making sure to give the crowd the staples of Cheap Trick glorious past with “The Flame”, “I want you to want me”, “Dream Police” and “Surrender” to name a few. The elder Nielsen throughout the show took from his mic stand guitar picks with which he would play and then send sailing into the crowd to fans. At one point in the show he made his way in front of me and as I captured it flipped a red Nielsen pick directly at me and he has some deadly aim as it hit me in the chest. That was definitely a highlight for me being a fan since the early days of the band.

Continuing the rock next was Joan Jett and the Blackhearts as they came out to the cheers of the crowd beginning their set with an iconic song of hers with “Bad Reputation”. The next two songs were covers that fans know and love the Jett renditions of “Cherry Bomb” a Runaways cover and one from Gary Glitter that gave us “Do you wanna touch me” a band mainstay. Playing songs new and old, the favorite of most everyone was from the 80’s in the iconic MTV hit that takes us all back to a simpler time, “I Love Rock N Roll”. Joan hasn’t lost a step as she still commands the stage with her patented guitar style and guttural voice that has made her the rocker she is today. The Blackhearts behind her are guitarist Dougie Needles, bassist Hal B. Selzer and Thommy Price on the drums helping her to continue the rock and treating the fans to the sounds of their punk sound.

The final set of the night featured the legendary female fronted hard rocking band Heart, led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. For over 40 years together on stage these woman can rock as hard now as they did in the early days with Nancy’s incredible guitar work and Ann’s mythic distinct vocals. Playing fan favorites from their extensive library such as “Magic Man” from the band’s debut album “Dreamboat Annie” and monster hit “Barracuda” from their second album “Little Queen” released a year later. The set featured songs from the bands 16th studio album with songs “two” and a newer version of the bands 2012 song “Beautiful Broken”, featuring James Hetfield, which was met with arousing enthusiasm. Craig Bartock on lead guitar played with masterful precision as his fingers danced along the neck of his guitar as if he were chasing the perfect note for each song. Chris Joyner on keyboard added to the mythical rock and roll sound that has followed Heart throughout its tenure through songs like “What about Love”, “Alone” and “These Dreams”. The rhythm section of the band is comprised of bassist Dan Rothchild and longtime drummer Ben Smith who comple the sound of the band’s catalog both through the harder grittier songs and the lighter breathier ballads. The set had its hard heavy moments and the softer musical interludes that Heart is known for.

These bands are living proof that Rock and Roll is not dead! Heart, Joan Jett and Cheap Trick have recorded and toured for over 40 years and all still going strong. If you have the chance to see these 3 bands in your area do yourself a favor and get out and see some true rock stars that are truly part of Rock Royalty.
