IN FLAMES
Interview and Review By ~ Aniruddh (Andrew) Bansal

In Flames got the show going at around 10.10 with the first song Cloud Connected, which was a really pleasant surprise. They usually play this song in the middle or towards the end of their set. Its my favorite In Flames song and I really love it. It was a great way to start! I managed to get up to the second row towards the left side. They made a few changes from the set that they played on last year's North American headline tour, and the next song Embody The Invisible from the Colony album was one of them. It got a great reaction from the crowd. Pinball Map was played next, and it was even better!

Then it was time for a couple of songs from the latest album Sense of Purpose, the songs Delight and Angers and Disconnected. A heard a lot of people complain about the new songs last year, but this time people seemed to be having a good time even during these songs. The voices were loud for the chorus sing-along during Disconnected. Then Anders took a moment to thank the crowd and asked everyone to give a shout out for the opening bands. It was good to see another song off of Clayman being played, the song Square Nothing.

They went back to the Whoracle album to bring out The Hive for this highly energetic crowd. The next one Drifter was a lot of fun. I don't remember head banging so furiously for any song in the shows I've been to recently. The mosher's were also going crazy during this one. Two awesome title songs Clayman and Come Clarity followed. Then came the slow sing-along Leeches. They played a couple more off of the latest album and then it was time for the ending portion, which is always the best part of an In Flames set. It didn't disappoint this time either, the songs Quiet Place, Take This Life and My Sweet Shadow. I felt that Take This Life would have been a better closing song as compared to My Sweet Shadow. That song has a much better intro and its generally more intense.

Everything about this show was better than last year, the song selection, the band's on-stage performance and the crowd. Anders brought a lot of energy and aggression to the place. I talked to a few people who didn't see last year's show and they were not entirely happy with this set list. Then there were people who saw them last year, me included, who thought that this was a good set. As Anders said in an interview before the show, you can't please everyone! But he was definitely getting more involved with the crowd. He even took a camera from some guy in the first row and started recording us while we were singing the chorus. The replacement guitarist for this tour, Nicklas Engel had good stage presence too. The other members Peter, Bjorn and Daniel were awesome as usual. Anders announced that they will be back in the States touring for another new album in 2011. I'm sure it'll be worth the wait!

INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW (ME) AND ANDERS

Me: How's the North American tour going so far? Having fun?

Anders: Yea its good man. Its going pretty quickly. We are enjoying ourselves. It's the last time we'll be in America for a while now, so its all good.

Me: Have you gotten used to playing with the replacement guitar player Niklas?

Anders: Oh yea. We know each other from back in the day. He's been going in back and forth with us for a while now. He's been part of the band for some time so its no problem at all.

Me: Given a choice of songs you would like to do, whether the crowd approves them or not, what songs would you like to do?

Anders: I don't know, its never a certain song or anything, its the moment that happens right there and then, It could be a song from back in the day or it could be a brand new one. It really depends on the communication between us. I mean, obviously the newer songs which we haven't played too much are a lot of fun and at the same time we try breaking it up to play some old songs. So I like the whole catalog and I never regret anything we've done. Everything is fun to do.

Me: With the latest album A Sense Of Purpose, would you agree that you've gone a slight change musically?

Anders: I think we don't sound like when we started out, but I think with all albums and not just the new one, there is a change and we've tried to do something different. We don't repeat ourselves. Obviously we keep the core elements of melody and aggression and that's what we have. Every time we release a new album we always hear this. You changed it to this, you changed it to that. Its funny to see because it moves up every single album, when people say hey what's the big change and you know, I've always had to , for some reason, defend myself in interviews since I started in this band. Whoracle was a big change from Jester Race and Colony was a big change from Whoracle, so on and so worth. So I don't see a major change. Obviously it's a different sound and that's the way I'd like to keep it.

Me: I personally like the album, its just that I get that question a lot from the fans so I wanted to ask..

Anders: Oh yea yea, they are entitled. But I don't want them to know exactly why .. you can't please everyone because its really really hard, but I'm super happy with this one and I'm super happy with the first album.

Me: What bands do you currently listen to in your leisure time?

Anders: I'm super stoked about the new Alice In Chains album. I think its going to be great to hear that one, because I'm a huge Alice In Chains fan. I actually got to see them with the new singer when we were touring Australia and they were really really good. Apart from that, I'm enjoying the bands that we're here touring with. I was amazed by 3 Inches Of Blood when I saw them the first night on this tour and they took me by surprise.

Me: What do you see in the near and long term future for In Flames?

Anders: We'll continue to tour this new album till February next year. After this tour in America we're going back home and doing Russia and the eastern blocs, hopefully Japan and Asia. There's talk about China. You'd be interested to know that that might be the first time there. We might do Australia again. Then we're going to take some time off and then start thinking about the next album and record some time.

Me: That was my next question. When can we expect the next album? Anders: We don't really know. First we want to feel like we have to record one. Actually I'm looking forward to going back to the studio but that changes, you know. We'll see when this touring cycle is done that we are so tired of each other that we would need a little bit of a break. But I would expect it sometime in 2011.

Me: Are there any bands which you've never toured with and you'd love to?

Anders: I want to tour with Tool. That would be awesome. I want to tour with Nine Inch Nails but that would be out of question now since they don't really exist anymore. Then it would have been really cool to have done tours back in the day with Morbid Angel and Death and all these bands that I grew up listening to.

Me: Anything being talked for the band's 20th anniversary yet?

Anders: We don't have anything yet. We'll see.

Me: I heard something in the making of the Alias video about a new DVD coming out. Is there talk of that?

Anders: Yes we are talking about it but we'll see. We're not in a hurry but there will definitely be something.

Me: A fan in England wants to know if you'll be playing more of the older stuff on the upcoming tour there with Killswitch Engage.

Anders: The answer is no. We'll be touring the new album. Obviously we will play the older stuff from our whole catalog but it won't be based on any old material. There'll be a few songs here and there.

Me: Some fans in the other parts of the US want to know when you'll be touring next and will you be doing places like Oklahoma, which you're not doing this time?

Anders: We will definitely play in Oklahoma but I don't know when yet.
