With Special Guests: Wilson & Kaleido
November 21, 2015
Royal Oak Music Theater

Royal Oak, MI welcomed more than the first big snow storm of the season last Saturday night. They were also host to a spectacular night of live rock music featuring three of the best homegrown Michigan bands. So, storm or no storm, this was a lineup not to be missed!

First up were Kaleido. Their music has been described as a blend of GNR style rock 'n roll with a dash of No Doubt appeal. Front woman Christina Chriss was captivating and her band mates Joey Fava (drums), Cody Morales (bass), Ronnie Rosoling and Jamie Burnham (guitars), electric. Kaleido is a solid and fun live band that made full use of their short 30 minute set and the home town crowd was very receptive and responsive to them. And most notably during their hit song "Love & War", which has dominated one of the local radio stations nightly 'People's Choice' showdown.

As more fans filed into the Royal Oak Music Theater in between sets, Wilson's classic eagle banner was now hung. A slightly different set up from the last time I saw them (opening for Trivium & Tremonti on the Hard Drive Live tour), small 'marquee' lights adorned their amplifier rigs and they had a little more stage space to run around and do damage. If you don't know, seeing Wilson is what front man Chad Nicefield has described as being "the sound of bastard swords wizzing through the air violently and smashing everything in sight." Along with Jason Spencer, and Kyle Landry (guitars), James Lascu (bass), and Matt Puhy (drums), Wilson are a raucous group of dudes who put on an energetic show and you could tell they were having a good time doing it. This was especially evident in their performances of "Windows Down", "Right to Rise" and "Snake Eyes". Towards the end of the latter song, Nicefield marched out while pounding a large bass drum donned over his shoulders, laid it down center stage and dove head first into the clamoring crowd below.

The room was now plenty warmed up and ready for the night's headliner, Pop Evil. They kicked off their set with “Deal With the Devil” (from their 2013 album Onyx) followed by "Last Man Standing" (off of War of Angels). The night was filled with multiple hit songs from the bands catalog and six of the bands 15-song setlist included new tracks from their latest release Up which has already spawned two more hits in "Footsteps" and "Ways To Get High".

From the moment lead singer Leigh Kakaty took his position on the riser front/center stage he commanded the crowd's attention. Dave Grahs and Nick Feulling masterfully slayed our ears with those heavy & crunch-tastic Pop Evil riffs and killer solos we've come to know so well. Bassist Matt Dirito held down the low-end while prowling his way around the stage from one riser to the next & drummer Josh "Chachi Riot" Marunde literally reminded me of Animal behind the kit beating on the drums and cymbals not just sitting but standing up as well, not missing a beat.

Mid-way through the set Leigh mentioned how in Pop Evil's early days they would play variety of cover songs and asked the home crowd if it would be alright if they played one for them this night. They started into Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" which was met with the loud cheers and a majority of the crowd singing along during the chorus. The crowd was given another treat when Leigh and Grahs came out into the crowd and played "Stepping Stone" acoustically in front of the sound board. Whatever the tempo was on this night~ Pop Evil's performance was precise, heartfelt and energetic.

All around it was a great night for Michigan bands and the fans who braved the cold and snow to be in attendance as this also marked Pop Evil's first time playing the Royal Oak Music Theater. Special for me in the sense that~ I've been lucky enough to see how much all three of these bands have grown over the past few years since following them around small bars and clubs, festivals and even State Fairs and the well deserved success that's followed. Here's to much more continued success to each of the bands! Cheers guys! \m/
