Express Live!

Columbus, OH

Photos and Review by ~James Urban

This was my first time at the Express Live! Venue ad I have to say this is a great place to see any concert. It has a wide open floor plan, a large stage, great acoustics, coupled with food and beer, what more could you ask for. The venue continued to fill as we awaited the evening’s metal entertainment of Carcass, Testament and the mighty Slayer! Making our way to the photo pit, we had to navigate the horde of metal fans anticipating the onslaught of Metal faithful clamoring for closer spot to the stage. As the lights dimmed and the music began to fill our ears, Carcass took the stage with a furry. This four man band, lead by bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker, took the stage beginning the metal attack on our night. Heavy melodic music filled the air and charged the fans with metal fit for human consumption. Bill Steer and Ben Ash’s guitar work coupled with the pounding drums of Daniel Wilding completed their signature grindcore sound that is Carcass. First to the stage for Testament was drummer Gene Hoglan flashing the horns and starting the crowd enticement. Next was Chuck Billy and the front line members of the band Eric Peterson, Alex Skolnick and Steve Di Giorgio. Chuck screamed, “Are you Ready?” and they got right to business with their classic Do Not Resuscitate” which drew in the crowd instantly to begin thrashing and pounding their heads and fists. Lead by growling vocals, twin guitars rang out as the bass and drums thundered through another amazing set by Thrash Titans Testament.

By the time Slayer took the stage it was standing room only as a giant white curtain separated the band from the crowd. The lights went out and the curtain was flooded with red lights from behind. Haunting music was played as four giant white crosses appeared and began to slowly spin 180 degrees. In a flash the upside down crosses were replaced by four flying pentagrams that converged in the middle transforming into the Slayer logo to the roars of the fans. The logo then split in two and mirrored each other filling both halves of the stage covering, as the music began to diminish. The lights went out and the curtain dropped as the sound of drummer Paul Bostaph tapping his cymbal leading Kerry King and Gary Holt to begin an onslaught of guitar riffs fast and hard. Red and yellow lights filled the venue as the band began the set with the title track of their twelfth studio album “Repentless”. As the band played on, I believe they got faster and harder behind the lyrics and growling voice of lead singer and bassist Tom Araya. From one song right into the next, new and old, the band with their vast musical catalog obliterated all in attendance as only Slayer can. I have seen them now twice and they did not disappoint, this show was as incredible as the first time and they are an amazing live band. If you get a chance to catch the Repentless World Tour in a concert hall near you, don’t hesitate to check out these giants of thrash metal…… The Mighty Slayer!!
