Arriving in Columbus Ohio tonight for the annual 99.7 The Blitz Great Summer Smokeout, fans were met with fun, food, music and storms. The storms however seemed to bring out more fans then rather than keeping them away to experience this outdoor rock and metal show featuring Nine Shrines, Devour the Day, Red Sun Rising and headliner Volbeat.

As the rain started to fall the first band of the night was delayed about 10 minutes, but when Nine Shrines hit the stage they came to play. This local band from Columbus has a heavy sound that brought out there local following to the show. After about 3 songs the sky opened up and put a literal damper on their set for about 15 minutes, but as soon as the rain stopped they kicked it in hi gear for 3 more songs. Devour the Day is another up and coming band from Memphis Tennessee that is on the road right now playing concerts and festivals all over the country. This band of young musicians leaves themselves on the stage as they rip through each song attacking their instruments in artistic fashion. Blake Allison is a dynamic singer that works the crowds by including them into the songs and the stage show. Bassist Joey “Chicago” Walser is a unique musician in the way he literally attacks the music from his instrument, laying down the heavy bass lines that are the foundation of the songs. This is another great live band that is very appreciative of the fans, promoters and other bands on tour with them.

Red Sun Rising has been all over the airwaves on The Blitz as well as XM/Sirius Satellite radio with their smash hits “The OtherSide” and “Amnesia”. Being another local band from Akron, Ohio, they had a large following come to Columbus to support this up and coming hard and heavy band. Lead singer Mike Protich really worked the crowd throughout the set making each person feel like a part of the band. RSR finished their set with one of their newest singles “Emotionless” which was such a hit that everyone in attendance sang in unison with the band. Playing Festivals and shows all over the country they are a band to watch and a great live band to see.

Headliners Volbeat were up next through the rain to bring all of us the heavy music we have been waiting for. Lead singer Michael Poulsen came to the mic strapped with his guitar and without a word broke into the bands most recent radio hit “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” which was met with roars from the crowd. The Rockabilly Heavy Metal sound that is Volbeat is so recognizable with Poulsens unique voice powering through every song. Next was a medley of sorts with songs “Heaven nor Hell”, “A Warriors Call” and “Rebel Monster” which feature some of the best licks from guitarist Rob Caggiano as he ran the fretboard with his fingers as skillfully as a surgeon. The rhythm section with bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen and drummer Jon Larsen came ready to rumble as they laid down the tempo that holds the heavy and fast music together. This is the third time that I have covered Volbeat and I have to say that they have gotten better and more dynamic each time. Like many big bands they have their own sound, and Volbeat is no exception as from the first note you know who is coming to the stage.

If you have a chance to check out any and all of these bands make sure you get your tickets and prepare to experience a night of rock and metal that will please even the most skeptical music fan.
